Should I Rent a Rug Doctor or Have a Professional Clean My Carpets?

Should I rent a Rug Doctor or hire a Professional Carpet Cleaner?

We all like to save money!

As home owners ourselves, we know what it means to live on a budget and we also like to do some projects ourselves.

If you are a true do-it 'your-selfer;'

What better way to save money than to clean your carpet yourself, right?

So should you rent a Rug Doctor or have your Carpets Cleaned Professionally?

Let's start by relaying a true story:

One of our Lead Technicians was at a very large big box store (Think... Home Depot, Menards, Lowes, Walmart, etc.).

The husband and wife duo in front of him at the check-out were all set.

They had the Rug Doctor machine, the general cleaning solution,  the spot and stain removal kit, the pet spot package, even the fur removal kit!  They were ready for a do-it yourself weekend!

The machine itself looked like it had seen some pretty heavy use. But they looked determined!

By the time the Customer was done at the register, the total price flashing boldly above was actually more than what we charge to professionally clean an average sized home! Our Lead Technician wanted to take out a business card and say, "I would be happy to save you an entire days work and clean your carpet myself for less than what you are paying right now!"

We do want to emphasize that renting a machine may be a viable option in some circumstances.

(Interim cleaning, 3 am pet mess emergencies, etc.)

But here are a couple things to keep in mind before you rent a Rug Doctor and clean your carpet yourself.

TIME

Time is money!

By the time you:

1. Drive to the store...

2. Find the machine...

3. Wait to rent the machine and check out...

4. Carry and load the machine into your car...

5. Drive back home...

6. Carry the machine into your home

7. Read the instructions...

8. Set the machine up and prepare the cleaning chemicals...

9. Move the furniture

10. Do the actual work; Cleaning the carpet yourself...

11. Wrap the machine up for return...

12. Carry and load the machine into your car...
13. Drive back to the store...

14. Then return the machine to the store...

15. Finally, drive back home..

How much time have you Invested?

2 hours, 3 hours, 8 hours or more?

Did we mention that most jobs take us about 1 to 2 hours to clean professionally?

No traffic, no waiting in line at the store, no hauling carpet cleaning machines... You can wait for us to clean the carpet for you while you read a book, watch TV or peruse Instagram.  Or like many of our Customers you can go about your day (Shopping, Mountain Climbing, Skydiving, etc.)

STRESS

Have you done a Home Project before?

Even with the best of intentions, from our experience most home projects can quickly become very stressful. From not having the right tool or tools. From forgetting to buy the right supplies. From your husband not being willing to read the instructions....

MONEY

As we mentioned at the outset:

By the time we rent the machine, pay for the general cleaning solution,  buy the spot and stain removal kit, the pet spot package, the upholstery kit, the auto cleaning kit, even the fur removal kit:

The price adds up quickly!!! And you still have to do the work yourself!

JUST A FEW OTHER FACTORS TO KEEP IN MIND-

1, Drying

Some older and smaller machines are very efficient at spraying water and soap on your carpet.  However, over time they can become less and less efficient at extracting the moisture from your carpet. This can lead to long drying times, even potential damage if your carpet does not dry quickly.

2. Re-soiling (Does your carpet quickly look dirty after the rental machine clean)

Many machines have you mix the cleaning chemicals and water together for the clean. Most cleaning solutions are designed to attract dirt so in can be extracted. The problem is that if you leave residue in your carpet it will continue to attract dirt and re-soil very quickly.

Many times we hear Customers say,

"We cleaned the carpet ourselves and it looked good- but after a little while it looked worse than before we cleaned it ourselves!"

Many times this is because of residue and poor suction in small rental machines.

With our Cleaning Process- We Do NOT mix the water and soap at the same time!

We spray down a mild soap separately, then we Extract the dirt with Steam.

The carpet dries quickly and there is no chemical or soap residue!!
